Also known as The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, the Arkansas River is a mecca for river enthusiasts. Fifteen of Colorado's 54 highest peaks, those taller than 14,000 feet - aka Fourteeners - reside here in south central Colorado. Veteran peak baggers know the best way to improve odds for a successful summit include getting a pre-sunrise start, pack lots of water, dress in layers, stick to established trails and turn back immediately if bad weather approaches. Some peaks require specialized mountaineering gear - do your homework.

Collegiate Peaks Scenic & Historic Byway. Colorado's newest designated byway leads visitors to a unique set of characteristics only found in this area. The rich history of Chaffee County and the Upper Arkansas Valley can be experienced on every segment of the Collegiate Peaks Byway, from the 14,000+ foot peaks rising above the valley floor to the nationally recognized historic structures scattered throughout the county.

Salida hosts an impressive calendar of performing arts and special events including great theater productions, a fantastic array of music at coffee shops, taverns, Salida High School’s John Held Auditorium, or the Salida Steamplant Performing Arts Center and Conference Center

Stretching for 148 miles from Leadville through Chaffee and Fremont Counties to the Pueblo Reservoir, the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is a unique park managed by both the Colorado Division of Parks and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Within the park are numerous recreation sites--some improved and some not. Since this is a new park, it remains a work in progress with projects such as its Watchable Wildlife area at Five Points, in Fremont County in the making. The Park system includes sites in Fremont County at Pinnacle Rock, Five Points and lone Pine as well as sites in Chaffee County including Railroad Bridge, north of Buena Vista; Fisherman's Bridge and Ruby Mountain, near Nathrop; Hecla Junction between Nathrop and Salida: and Rincon, southeast of Salida.
